Details of the contruction

Contact system

Circuit breakers of N-RAPID series are equipped with classic lever contact systems consisting of movable and fixed contacts Contact lever with a flexible braid is connected, at the bottom, to the lower fixed band (4) and at the top portion equipped with main contact (2) consisting of a moving contact. The fixed contact consists of upper fixed contact (3) with soldered second main contact (1). High endurance of the main contacts is secured by the arcing contact (5) which is designed as exchangeable unit and delivered as a spare part. It is manufactured, from copper like other conductive parts. Exceptions are the main contacts which are made from AgZnO alloy.

A coiled contact spring assures contact force and fast opening of contacts. The top and lower connecting bands (7, 8) enable the connection of the circuit breaker to the power circuit of the customer. They can be delivered either in horizontal or vertical executions depending on customer requirements.

Mechanism

The mechanism of the high speed circuit breaker is used to mechanically control movable contact positions. It consists of an independent unit including a lever supporting the movable contact.

The mechanism is composed of the following parts:

  • Side wall of the mechanism (1) – consists of frame, where other parts of the mechanism are located.

  • Insulator (3) – an electrical insulation between driving electromagnet (its armature) and its own mechanism whose metallic parts are electrically connected to the movable contact.

  • Pull rod (6) – together with the insulator (7) forms a mechanical bond to the driving electromagnet.

  • Shaft (5), cams (6) and pull rods (4) form a latch of the high speed circuit breaker.

  • Capture (2) is a mechanical bond between the latch of the high speed circuit breaker and the movable contact. If the capture is tripped, the breaker opens when the overcurrent and electrodynamic trips are activated.

Drive

The breaker is closed by with the help of an electromagnet controlled by an electronic unit located inside the electronic control box and by a power switch located in the control box of the drive. The maximum closing time is 450 ms. During the closing process of the breaker, the latch of the mechanism is locked and after closing, the voltage applied to the electromagnet is opened. The drive is actuated at closing only and the circuit breaker remains in the closed position only mechanically. The electromagnetic drive is manufactured for the whole range of supply voltages of the high speed circuit breaker – DC 24 V (only for breaker 2600 A), 48 V, 60 V, 110 V, 220 V and AC 110 V, 230 V.

The power, the customer needs to ensure for such an electromagnet, is 1400 W for a period of 450 ms (breaker with rated operation current of 2600 A) or 1750 W for a period of 400 ms (breaker with rated operation current of 4200A). The control voltage of the circuit to close the high speed circuit breaker can then be DC 24 V, 48 V, 60 V, 110 V, 220 V or AC 110 V, 230 V.

Trip devices

The high speed circuit breakers are equipped with electromagnetic overcurrent trip, undervoltage trip and if the customer wishes also shunt or electrodynamic trips can also be provided. It is also possible to place a special order for manual opening – only for high speed circuit breakers of up to 1500 V.

Overcurrent trip

The overcurrent trip is designed as an electromagnet whose magnetic circuit is excited by the magnetic field of the current passing through the power circuit of the high speed circuit Breaker. If a certain current value is exceeded, the trip armature surpasses the power of the coiled spring which acts in the opposite direction and is retracted to the magnetic circuit of the trip. This motion is then transferred through the cradle to the mechanism latch and opens the high speed circuit breaker. The opening time of the breaker achieved in such a way is from 4 to 5 ms. Overcurrent values which cause the breaker to open are set on the scale. Overcurrent trips are delivered in five basic current ranges 0.5 to 1.5 kA, 1.5 to 5 kA, 3 to 8 kA, 5 to 10 kA and 6 to 13 kA. The scales are usually calibrated after 0.5 kA. Accuracy of set current values is ±10%

Undervoltage trip

Undervoltage trip is based on the principle of tripped energy of spring compression. Its power unit is a holding electromagnet with a very low power input (3.6 W), whose armature compresses the coiled spring. When the control voltage decreases or when there is a power loss, the electronic unit of the under-voltage trip disconnects the electromagnet from the power supply. The compressed spring puts to motion the armature of the holding electromagnet. The armature then unlocks the lock mechanism and causes the breaker to open. The trip opens the breaker between 75% and 35 % of the rated control voltage value and even when this value is reduced slowly. The trip prevents premature activation of the breaker as long as the control voltage is less than 35 % of its rated value. Safe closing of the high speed circuit breaker is possible after 85 % of the rated control voltage value is exceeded.
The maximum opening time of the breaker reached in this way is 120 ms. The holding electromagnet is supplied from the breaker supplying unit. The customer should only transfer the control voltage. The control voltage can be selected from the following values: DC 24 V, 48 V, 110 V, 220 V or AC 110 V, 230 V.

Shunt trip

The power unit of the shunt trip is again an electromagnet, whose armature unlocks the device mechanism when transferring voltage to its coil and causes the high speed circuit breaker to open. Excitation of the electromagnet of the voltage trip is controlled by an electronic unit. The power input of the electromagnet is 150 W. The electromagnet is manufactured within the range of the following supply voltages: DC 24V, 48 V, 60 V, 110 V, 220 V or AC 110 V, 230 V. This breaker voltage, on a concrete breaker, is always the same as its supply voltage. The opening time of the high speed circuit breaker, when using the voltage trip, is a maximum of 60ms. The shunt trip is functional in the range from 65 to 110 % of the breaker supply voltage. (i.e. voltage of electromagnet coil). In this case, the customer should ensure the supply and control voltage of the voltage trip.

Electrodynamic trip

The electrodynamic trip is designed as controlled Thomson coil. It consists of electronic control unit, coil with a copper ring into which the capacitor battery is discharged. The copper ring unlocks the mechanism and causes the high speed circuit breaker to open. The control voltage of the electrodynamic trip can be selected from the following values: DC 24 V, 48 V, 60 V, 110 V, 220 V or AC 110 V, 230 V. The opening time of the high speed circuit breaker is within the range of 5 to 15 ms depending on the control voltage of the electrodynamic trip used.

Arc chute and adaptor

Arc quenching is done in an arc chute (1). Three types of arc chutes are delivered for the high speed circuit Breaker– 1X2 (or 1X2A), 1X4 and 1X8. Association to the circuit breaker is given by rated voltage UNe of the device. The chamber 1X2 (or 1X2A) is designed for a rated voltage of 750 V DC, chamber 1X4 for up to 1500 V and chamber 1X8 for up to 3000 V. All chambers are SOLENARC types.

Their lower part is equipped with metallic grid where the arc is divided to a series of arcs and where they are intensively cooled. Their upper part is equipped with insulating grid where the arc is elongated. Both principles lead. The deflector (2) located over the arc chamber reliably prevents regeneration of arc above the arc chute. The device quenches even at critical currents within the range from 20 to 50 A without any additional equipment. The arc burning time in this case is from 200 ms to 7s. It is possible to shorten this time by equipping the high speed circuit breaker, rated voltage of 1500 V DC, with auxiliary AFE blow-out unit. The interrupted current direction can only be one – the switch is unidirectional.

Adapter (3) forms a transition between the contact system and the arc chute. It directs the movement of the arc plasma to the arc chute. A bolt, equipped with insulation covers (5), is used to connect the arc chute and arcing electrodes (4).

Electronic control box and auxiliary contacts

The electronic control box (1) is positioned above the drive electromagnet. It is connected to the high speed circuit breaker by two M6 bolts. The switch off counter is also positioned on the front panel. Nine switching contacts with forced opening, in accordance with ČSN EN 60947-5-1 standard, and with rated current of 10 A/230 V AC, are placed at the bottom of the box.

These contacts signal two breaker positions – switched in or switched off and switch all of them at the same time. Their motion is mechanically connected to the motion of the movable contact of the circuit breaker. All auxiliary contact poles are brought out to two connectors X12, X13 (2) positioned at the front panel of the box. The contact of relay, signaling the state of readiness of the control electronics, is brought out to connector X13. The control electronics of the high speed circuit breaker is located in the upper part of the box. It consists of four functional blocks positioned on independent plates designated as:

  • Supply unit G3

  • Drive control + undervoltage trip unit FQU3

  • Shunt trip + auxiliary blow out unit AFE FVA3

  • Electrodynamic trip unit FE3

The customer should transfer the control voltage to the connector (3) located at the front panel of the box.

Position indicator

The position indicator indicates the position of the main contacts – closed „ I „ or opened „ O“. The position indicator is located at the front side of the drive electromagnet and is visible from the same side as the switch off counter.

Auxiliary AFE blow-up unit

The auxiliary AFE blow-out unit consists of a blow-out coil and an electronic unit which controls its excitation when the circuit breaker is being opened. The AFE serves to shorten the opening time in critical current areas (20 to 50A). It is possible to use it only with high speed circuit breakers with a rated voltage of 750 V DC and 1500 V DC. Its main functions are the following:

During the opening process using undervoltage, shunt or electrodynamic trips, the capacitor battery is discharged to the blow out coil after the command is given to open the high speed circuit breaker. The polar extension piece of the blow-out coil closely fits the main contacts from both sides. A magnetic field, which integrates with the magnetic field of the burning arc, is created in the area of the main contacts. The orientation of the magnetic field of the blow-out coil is such that the resultant magnetic field in the space under the arc is boosted and on the contrary it is weakened in the space above the arc. The result is a dynamic force acting upwards i.e. from the contact to the arc chamber. This force causes a fast motion of the arc from the contacts to the adapter and to the lower part of the arc chamber where the arc is extinguished.

Current through the power circuit should flow only in one direction when the AFE auxiliary blow-out unit is used.
